Despite Alex G, a popular alternative and indie music artist, playing a huge role in my development in early high school, I never had the chance to see him live before this year.
Thankfully, on Oct. 4, I was able to travel to Nashville, Tennessee, with my boyfriend and one of my closest friends to see him. After securing resale tickets a couple of weeks before the show, we were all highly anticipating the day of the concert.
Alex G released his 10th studio album this summer, titled “Headlights.” This album has some of his best work in my opinion, although his older music tends to gain more popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok as time passes by.
His older music will always have a special place in my heart, but tracks on “Headlights” such as “June Guitar” and “Oranges” are huge standouts in his discography for me.
“Headlights” released on July 18 and peaked at No. 166 on the United States Billboard 200.
I was itching to see the new album live and also had hopes of hearing some of his oldies that I love. I stalked the setlist for each of his shows for weeks to see what he was playing.
Once the day came, we all loaded into the car and made our way to Nashville with an incredibly necessary Buc-ee’s trip along the way. We eventually arrived at the iconic Ryman Auditorium and made our way to our seats, thrilled at the view we had.
The opener, Nilüfer Yanya, came on at 8 p.m. and sang beautiful songs, with her guitar standing out among most of them. She put on a great set that had me looking up her songs on Spotify after. My favorite was “Call It Love.”
After she finished, we waited rather impatiently for Alex G to come on the stage, which he finally did around 9 p.m.
He opened his set with “Louisiana,” one of the longer tracks from his newest album, which was the perfect start to the set in my opinion.
Most of the main part of his set were songs from “Headlights” with other standouts such as “Brick” and “Horse” from his album, “Rocket.”
Once these songs finished, we arrived at the encore of his set. Most artists do a couple predecided songs as part of their encore but Alex G brought something to his show that I had never seen before at the concerts I have been to. He asked the crowd what songs they wanted to hear and took recommendations for what to perform.
Despite the entire show being amazing, the encore was by far the most enthralling part for me. He sang hits like “Sarah” and “Harvey” as well as some of my other favorites I was hoping to hear such as “In My Arms” from his album “House Of Sugar,” which I think is his best work.
He ended the show by singing “Change” from his most popular album, “Trick.”
The concert was money well spent and I find Alex G to be an artist that you fall in love with even more after seeing him live.
He has upcoming tour dates in Europe in November as well as shows in Australia and Japan in February 2026.
