Designing the globe

Despite what part of the Earth an individual may come from, creativity and imagination are the languages that bond the world of fashion together. Across the globe, a multitude of unique designers have extended their reach beyond their roots, transforming themselves into household names. Here are 10 of my favorite designers who have distinguished themselves due to their unparalleled originality.

Elie Saab

From originally designing wedding gowns to dressing A-list celebrities, the empire of Elie Saab has withstood the test of time. The Lebanese designer debuted his first collection at just 18-years-old during a time where Beirut was in the midst of war. Since then, Saab’s designs have been a staple of class and elegance, creating legendary looks such as Halle Berry’s burgundy dress she wore to the Oscars in 2002.

Guo Pei

Born in China, Guo Pei is one of the most brilliant crafters the industry has ever seen. Incorporating a modern twist to her traditional Chinese heritage, she would create elaborate pieces such as Rihanna’s intricate, yellow ensemble that she wore to the Met Gala in 2015. As one of the most influential designers in the world, Pei has maintained a legacy of extraordinary craftsmanship that can’t be duplicated.

Iris van Herpen

Gaining inspiration from architecture, human anatomy and the elements of nature, Dutch designer Iris van Herpen intertwines these concepts creating multi-dimensional designs as ethereal as they come. Details such as the shape and movement of the body have influenced van Herpen’s distinctive approach to her collections. Instilled in all her pieces is the element of fluidity, transforming ordinary garments into enchanting designs.

LaQuan Smith

In spite of being denied by fashion schools FIT and Parsons, LaQuan Smith would not let these setbacks deter him from becoming the superstar fashion designer that he is today. Making his official debut in 2013, the New York native’s designs have become regulars on the red carpet worn by elite clientele. Thanks to his resilience and authenticity reflected throughout his collections, Smith has rightfully stuck his claim in the industry, increasing his power throughout the years.

Founded by Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo, the renowned duo’s designs embody the true essence of grace and style. Representing the epitome of glamor and mystique, Versace has reigned as one of the most acclaimed luxury brands over the past several decades. Founded by Gianni Versace in 1978, the Italian fashion house rose to prominence providing fresh takes on their signature look season after season.
