Finding yourself in college: We are all on our own journey

The only way to build the life you want is to first understand the person you want to become.

College exists in a uniquely vulnerable yet beautiful chapter of life, one where, for the first time, the wheel is truly placed in our hands. We are no longer passengers. We have the freedom to choose our direction, our pace, and our destination.

From the moment we step onto campus, we begin laying the foundation of our future: selecting our field of study, forming meaningful relationships and setting goals we hope to achieve.

We live in a society where possibility feels limitless, and while that freedom is empowering, it can also feel overwhelming—especially as we transition into adulthood.

When students enter a university, they are placed at the forefront of their own lives. From birth until the age of 18, our lives are largely guided by our parents.

High school may spark the desire for independence, but it is in college that independence truly takes shape. Living away from family for the first time is an adventure in itself — filled with uncertainty, growth, and unexpected lessons.

It is also one of the most defining transitions into adulthood. Independence teaches us discipline, organization and self-management. No one is there to demand attendance or remind us of deadlines; responsibility rests entirely with us.

Once we begin to understand ourselves as independent individuals, we start actively paving our own paths.

The University of Kentucky offers countless opportunities for exploration and connection; greek life, athletic and academic clubs, campus organizations and UK athletics, among many others. There is a place for everyone, but belonging requires courage.

I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. Trying something and discovering it isn’t for you is not failure; it is clarity. And when something does work out, it has the power to change your life.

The greatest loss comes not from trying and failing, but from never trying at all. Between the ages of 18 and 23, we truly have little to lose and everything to discover. Our lives are just beginning.

One of the hardest truths to accept as a college student is that you do not need to have everything figured out right now. The future cannot be predicted; it can only be shaped by how we choose to show up in the present.

Take classes you know nothing about and allow yourself to discover unexpected interests. Apply to countless internships and learn, through experience, what truly fits you. Set goals that feel easily attainable alongside ones that may take years to reach. Give yourself options. Explore each path with curiosity until one begins to make sense.

Nothing worth having comes easily — and that phrase exists for a reason, because it is undeniably true.

Human nature is diverse, and no single theory, timeline or way of living will ever suit every student at the University of Kentucky. As we navigate our individual paths and embrace our journeys, we gain a deeper understanding of who we are, who we are becoming and our personal nature.

Hold tightly to your passions and dreams; they are the fuel that will carry you forward. And if you are reading this feeling uncertain or fearful about the future, know that you are not alone.

Life is only just beginning. We are in charge of our own lives. We create the blueprint, and we decide who we will become.
