Best weekend trips from Lexington

Lexington, Kentucky, in the heart of the Bluegrass State, offers easy access to many fun and unforgettable weekend trips in and around the state. From the bustling city streets of Cincinnati, Ohio, to the calm, serene landscapes of Red River Gorge, there is something for everyone.

Mammoth Cave National Park

The largest cave system in the world also features rolling hills and river valleys that stretch for miles. The park has two levels, 52,380 acres of wooded forest and winding waterways that create a picturesque landscape above ground. Underground, there are about 420 miles of the world's longest known cave system. A journey into this cave system is a must, and the national park offers short, long and wheelchair-accessible tours so everyone can experience Mammoth Cave. It is a little over a two hour drive from Lexington, and with good lodging options in and around the park, it makes for a perfect weekend getaway.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Just across the Ohio River is a vibrant, full-of-life city that has so much more to offer than most people think. With a strong German heritage, Cincinnati hosts the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside Germany every September. It is a must-do if you are in Cincinnati around this time. Featuring great food, refreshing German beer and fun contests, there are festivities for everyone.

Also frequently ranked as one of the best zoos in the nation, the Cincinnati Zoo houses over 400 animal species. The zoo is also a leader in endangered species conservation, according to the zoo's official website.

Every year, around Christmas time, the zoo has its world-renowned Festival of Lights, which took the top spot in the Best Zoo Lights category in the 2025 Readers' Choice poll for the eighth consecutive year.

Now, about 25-30 minutes north of Cincinnati is a world-class amusement park called Kings Island. This park features world-class roller coasters such as Orion, Diamondback and the longest wooden roller coaster in the world, The Beast.

The park is also known for its annual Halloween Haunt, which happens every year, and the park is filled with eerie fog, scare zones and haunted houses throughout. Cincinnati, being about an hour and a half drive away, makes it a perfect weekend getaway from Lexington.

Red River Gorge, Kentucky

Just over an hour drive from Lexington, it is a perfect weekend or even day trip from the city. Red River Gorge is a picturesque canyon system in eastern Kentucky that consistently ranks among the top rock climbing and rappelling destinations in the world according to Kentucky Tourism.

Besides that, the gorge is also known for its exceptional hikes, such as the Indian Staircase, Gray’s Arch and Courthouse Rock. One of the most unique experiences, The Gorge Underground, is where you can take a boat or kayak tour in an underground flooded limestone mine in the gorge, and I think it is a true once-in-a-lifetime experience!

You also have a chance for some unique lodging experiences like camping on one of the Gorges campgrounds, staying in a log cabin in the middle of the woods or even a romantic treehouse getaway!

Nashville, Tennessee

More out of the way at a three-and-a-half-hour drive, it is still the perfect weekend destination with its vibrant music and nightlife scene. Also known as “Music City,” Nashville has a world-famous live music scene with places like the Johnny Cash Museum, Ryman Auditorium and Broadway.

Nashville is also a premier party city and is often chosen as a bachelor/bachelorette party destination because of its buzzing nightlife scene. Now, country music dominates the city, and a few big-name country artists, such as Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Alan Jackson, have part-time or full ownership of their bars in downtown Nashville.

This city is the perfect weekend getaway from Lexington for someone looking to have a good time with its vibrant nightlife and music scene, and it is different enough from Lexington to feel like a new place, but it is still close enough for a weekend trip.

Lake Cumberland, Kentucky

The perfect summertime getaway from the city, which I think is suitable for anyone. Known as the houseboat capital of the world, according to Kentucky Tourism, Lake Cumberland offers houseboat rentals throughout the lake at a range of prices for everyone.

Lake Cumberland is also a boater and watersports paradise with over 63,000 acres of open water and relaxing coves. The lake boasts five full-service marinas with restaurants, boat slips and fuel stations ready to make your day on the water perfect. Even if you don’t have a boat, many marinas on the lake offer boat rentals, which make it hassle-free to enjoy a weekend on the lake.

Another highlight on Lake Cumberland is the Lake Cumberland Poker Run, which features high-speed boats, rowdy cove parties and live music all day and night throughout the lake.

Another thing Lake Cumberland is well known for is its world-class striper and trout fishing. There are many fishing guides around the lake you can choose from to experience the best fishing Lake Cumberland has to offer.

There are many great lodging options around the lake, with a variety of places to choose from depending on what you are going for. Driving time from Lexington can depend on what marina or lodging destination you are staying at. But, usually no more than three hours. Lake Cumberland is the perfect summer destination for anyone trying to have a short weekend getaway from the city.

Lexington’s central location makes it the perfect place for unforgettable weekend adventures. From exploring the underground at Mammoth Cave, chasing an adrenaline rush at Kings Island, or living the lake life at Lake Cumberland. There are options for every kind of person and no shortage of fun, unforgettable experiences just a few hours away!
